Strange Manifestations in Lakeland

May 21st, 2008 by Carl Thomas.

Pastor Strader confronted the “strange manifestations” allegation at the Lakeland Outpouring the other night.

He said that if someone had a demon, for an usher to be notified, and they would glady be escorted out if the demon could not be cast out.

He then proceeded to show the crowd how to tell if a person was manifesting a demon….he said, “If they’re doing this,” as he folds his arms, leans back, and reaks of a critical/religious spirit.

are you referring to the Charisma article that warned of strange fire? cos that article also hinted that seeing/naming of angles was the first step on a slippery slope to mormonism– that is a little bit too much of a stretch, really.

A little tongue in cheek, yeah.

Have you met anyone who worshiped angels? I have. It’s called santaria. It is demonic. It is nothing like what Todd is preaching. They do not heal by grace. They always require a sacrifice, usually a blood sacrifice and I am not talking about the blood of Jesus.

Do a quick study of the NT and angelic encounters. The NT writers put a great deal of weight in angelic encounters. They were even more apt to believe that Peter’s angel was at the door then they were at Peter himself. They were common. Today if you mention angels in a meeting the heresy police all rise up and yell, “Angel worship! Angel Worship!”

I suspect a few people would have found John the Apostle somewhat suspect then…

    Rev 22:6-9
6 The angel said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must soon take place.”
7 “Behold, I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book.”
8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me.
9 But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellow-servant with you and with your brothers the prophets and of all who keep the words of this book. Worship God!”
    (NIV)

What!? A self confessed angel worshiper!? In church leadership!? Scandalous.

Sad and funny at the same time. I couldn’t agree more that the offense over angels is bizarre. If we take the supernatural out of a supernatural God and belief, what are we left with?

I don’t think demon possession is something to be joked about like that. That comment smacks of “if you’re not as wild as we are, you’re not spiritual enough” — spiritual haughtiness.

I think he was referring to oppression not possession and I doubt he was joking.

If he said a person was “manifesting a demon”, that would mean it’s coming from INSIDE the person, which is possession.

We can argue semantics all day. His statement still has that “more-spiritual-than-thou” sound to it.

Maybe. Or maybe he touched something. Is anyone more spiritual than you?

I was watching this meeting. They were joking, not to make light of demon possession, but to make a point concerning people getting out of sorts when they didn’t get what they wanted. Todd was not going to be there that night. It was the first time he had missed, and someone took his place. You could see that there were those in the crowd that were not happy about it. Todd makes it clear that it is the presence of God, the working of the Holy Spirit that brings miracles - often through other people in the crowd - but there are lways those ho seek out the man, no matter how much they point you to Jesus.
