I am not a hater. I love some good prophetic worship. Time does not permit me to come up with a definitive description of prophetic worship but I will say that generally it is worship music that ministers under a spirit of prophecy. Many songs are written out of experiences with Jesus, visions received in prayer, or burdens of intercession received by the Holy Ghost. With this emphasis on the lyrical content, I have found, at times, that some think that the music part of prophetic worship is kind of an afterthought. I can’t tell you how anoying that is.
In this light I will lump it all into two categories:
- God inspired, anointed, cutting-edge music that was inspired by either lyrically or musicaly by the Holy Ghost, performed by a gifted musician.
- Music with a semi-christian theme that is often off key with really odd lyrics out of time with the music.
I am really partial to the stuff in the first category. But among the good music in the first category, a lot of prophetic worship kind of depresses me. Is that odd or what?
I think some of the best stuff out there is by Rick Pino, Klaus Khuen, and Kari Jobe. (If any of you stuble on the blog give a shout out!)

Good post. I also like Keith Luker’s music, such as here:

also music by Alberto and Kimberly Rivera is excellent!
Just wanted to throw a link to my previous post listing my top songs of 2007

Carl, I’m on the same page with you on the worship. Watching your “last.fm” you play a lot of stuff that I really like. The CFNI crowd you mentioned I think did I really great thing by bringing the prophetic flow into music that is of higher quality and more structured. Glorious and Overtaken where they all perform together are some of my favorite albums of all time.
I used to listen to Rob Stearns and also the MorningStar worship stuff, but it tended to be in category 2. There would sometimes be a really good song with an anointed flow, but as a whole it didn’t quite all fit together.
I hate to speak heresy here, but I tend to put Jason Upton more in category 2 as well. I saw him live and I really thought it was great, and I think he has a couple of great songs, but just not quite put together well enough for me.
Will, I can’t believe it! You wrote what I only thought about the Jason. I did not have the courage to post it. A couple of his songs are really really good. But when I hear some of the other stuff I wonder if he knew that the recorder was on. I love Misty Edwards live. Some of the stuff on her albums has me scratching my head.
