Joe Grima says that he is against Turkey joining the EU
Thursday, 30 June, 2005

“The executive of the European Commission meets in Brussels this Wednesday to decide whether to adopt a plan for opening membership talks with Turkey. If the draft negotiating mandate is approved, the document will form the basis for entry negotiations with the government in Ankara. Formal discussions are due to start in October. The European Commission’s mandate must be approved unanimously by all of the 25 member states. But political pressure is growing for a suspension of Turkey’s EU entry after French and Dutch voters rejected a proposed EU constitution a month ago.” Deutsche Welle

This internet report from Deutche Well, brought to my attention by an American friend, reminded me that we have reached the moment of the truth for the case of Turkey in or out of the EU. The French and Dutch have voted against the European Constitution because, among others, one major factor prevented them from supporting that Constitution…

That factor was Turkey. The French know it, The Germans know it The Dutch know it, Barroso knows it and the Turks know it too. The majority of the peoples of Europe are against bringing in a nation of 70 million Muslims into their Christian fold whatever Turkey means to the geopolitics of 2005 and to the geopolitics of the future.

I belong to that crowd of millions who do not want the Turks in. It looks as if the seemingly all-powerful Eurocrats think otherwise. It seems that in spite of the clear anti -Turkish sentiment in the whole of Europe, the Eurocrats still believe that it is the peoples of Europe whom must change their minds and not they. It seems that they still want to teach the Noes a lesson by proceeding with the plan to bring the Turks into Europe.

I am surprised because the latest revolution in Europe does not go that far back for the Eurocrats to have forgotten so fast. One can’t even ask Caucescu how it feels to find the resistance of a people that one allows one’s autocratic power to defy because Caucescu has been six feet under for years now. The Eurocrats may think they have the power to defy the people of Europe but then they do not realise that by doing so they are pulling the rope that will ring Europe’s death knell.

I have been a pro-European for decades. Europe with 70 million Muslims in it is not the Europe I voted for and asked others like me to vote for. If this happens I will have no hesitation in supporting those who are against a Europe that includes the Turks. Malta has no place in a Europe with 70 million Muslims as their partners.

Keep the relationship to trade and free trade zones and we’re with you. If you extend that an inch further by bringing in the Turks as members of the EU, rapidly lowering Europe’s standards that I voted for, giving the upper hand to a religion that could not be father from mine, I will give my support to those who will want out wherever they may be.

I questioned the Prime Minister about Turkey on one of my TV programmes and I know what he thinks. He is for the Turks joining. Well, this is no longer his personal choice to make anymore because the people of Europe, and that includes us , are asking to be heard on this issue. He cannot give his favourable vote for Turkey and still be able to live with those in his country who are against.
