1. 1 Corinthians 12:28. “And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.” God has appointed, ordained, commanded, tongues to be exercised in the church, with or without denominational approval. There is no such thing as an “apostolic-Church” and a “post-apostolic-Church”. Jesus established one Church for all time. Period!
2. Mark 16:17. “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues.” In this passage, tongues is wholly a matter of one’s relationship with Christ through personal believing; the gift has nothing to do with the death of Apostles or canonizing of Scripture. Observe that in this case, believing is the same requirement as given to the Philippian jailor, Acts 16:31, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.” And Romans 10:9, “If you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart.” In each case, belief is the foundation of relationship with God. It is dangerous to predicate such relationships upon historical events or chronological dates.
If you have a heart for souls, you cannot help but have respect for what Reinhart Bonnke has done. (If you are not familiar with his ministry, check out this link, it gives you a pretty good idea what he is doing.) So as ridiculous as it sounds, when I got a postcard that said that he was having a special “Impartation breakfast” three hours away at 7:45 a.m. on a Saturday morning for $35 I actually went for it. I knew that this was little more than star gazing but I really did not care. The flyer said that he was going to lay hands on everyone in attendance and I wanted him to lay hands on me, even if it cost $35.
We got to the meeting and had a pretty bad breakfast. There was a stage with a podium, a keyboard and a video screen and about 500 people. I was in a front row table which happened to be right next to Reinhart’s. I was joking that he kept looking at me declaring the anointing over me and my ministry. He seemed like a really friendly guy and this was not feeling like a sham to raise money.
First up was a guy that leads worship for Bonnke’s crusades. He sang “How great is our God” and the crowd half sang along with him until about half way through. At that point everyone in the room began to shout the lyrics because the anointing of God came crashing down in the room. I was overwhelmed. It did not build up, we were not coached into it, we were not whipped up into a frenzy. We just sand a song and an incredibly powerful anointing flooded the room. this was not the gentle breeze some feel. This was not the joy thing. This was that fear of the Lord, “My God You are awesome,” Jesus is Alive and sitting at the right hand of the Father presence. Continue reading ‘Reinhart Bonnke Impartation Breakfast’
So I got one of these for my birthday last month. I have wanted a deep fryer for a really long time.
Now, neither my blood pressure nor my waistline need a fryer but I keep telling myself that if I use vegetable oil to fry chicken, it is like eating vegetables which I am sorely lacking.
So last night I finally busted the thing out and made some of these.
Now wherever you get hot wings better be glad they are not in the same town as me because I would put them out of business.
Ok, so you are asking, “What does this have to do with revival?”
I received my call to ministry pretty quickly after conversion. I distinctly remember years of begging God to allow me to preach and pleading with Him to use me in His service. When no public door opened I witnessed to anyone I could get to listen to me. I lead small groups, did the offering, prayed after worship, and preached to anything that would stay still long enough but still, my only ongoing preaching engagement was the shower.
I honestly wanted to fulfill the Call of God on my life. I don’t think I wanted the spotlight, I just wanted to be used for the purpose I was created. I used my vocal gift to earn a living as an account rep but I wanted to preach.
I hear this same line of reasoning for the drive behind most Christian musicians. Most of the good ones I talk to say that they feel created by God to lead worship and they want to do it as not only a ministry but want to be in vocational worship ministry.
But what boggles my mind is that many of these journeymen worship leaders use the first opportunity to lead worship as a way to make a buck off of smaller congregations. Church planters often have to spend hundreds of dollars to pay someone to “lead” a congregation in worship. A guy recently told me that a worship team said they would lead his brand spankin new church in worship for $1,000 a week. Are they crazy?
I am not ashamed to call that sin! REPENT!
We know that music is a huge part of a small church getting established and growing. But your ability to charge a fee does not come from the leverage you have on someone. Trust me worship leaders. You would be doing your ministry career far greater help by volunteering to lead worship. The little money you put off now in favor of being a blessing will be a far greater investment into your ministry in the long run.
If you decide to continue being a minister for hire, know that the pastor’s main goal for your ministry is to have you replaced as quickly as possible.
When we walked into their facility on of my guys said, “Wow!” and that kind of sums it up. It’s really easy for Spirit-filled folks to get lazy and depend on the anointing at the expense of excellence. It is our desire at The Mission to have an anointed service that is done with excellence.
Nathan and his crew show up like four hours early to set up and the place looked really good. A special award should go to the nice girl who braved the cold to welcome people in the parking lot.
Bob Hyatt has taken on George Barna’s book titled Pagan Christianity. I heard George speak at a minister’s conference last year. According to his research nobody in the room was saved (except for him).
He went on and on about how people were becoming disconnected with Christianity except for a little subset of Christians called Pentecostals.
I never read this book. I have run into enough people who agree with it to know that it is not of interest to me. That’s why I am glad someone like Bob has taken him to task chapter by chapter. The series is worth reading just for the laughs you get out of finding the nonsense that people get paid to write in books.
You know those churches that God inhabits when people gather to worship Him? You know, the ones that He saves people in, touches their hearts causing them to fall in love with Him and give their lives to His cause? Apparently God hates those places according to Barna.
Maybe one day Barna can bend a knee and ask the Father what He thinks about the situation.
I went to a Bill Johnson conference in Alabama the last few days. I planned to live blog it but I am not really that dedicated. . . sorry. Here was the main nugget that provoked me. He asked at one point,
Have you ever asked Jesus why your ministry is not as effective as His was on earth?
It takes into account that we believe that Jesus was not lying when He said we would do greater works. I was really driven to seek God for more. We come to a place in ministry that we understand how God uses us but we use that as an excuse to not seek for God to use us other ways. Let me explain.
Say you are an itinerant evangelist in a major classical pentecostal denomination. (This is purely hypothetical mind you) And you can now clearly see that when you are hosted by a church, hearts are renewed for Jesus and a new passion is ignited in the congregation. Your thoughts and prayers will tend to focus on asking that God will give you more (or larger) venues to operate in so you can do what you are doing. Your desire is that God would be given opportunity to operate in the lives of more people either through more ore larger meetings. Nothing wrong with that.
But what if you said, “I know my denomination may not like it but I am going to prophesy the Word of the Lord without apology!” And contend for that till you have it. Then decide that people are going to get healed, just like they did with Jesus.
It’s easy to rest on our little giftings and call that our calling but really we might just be getting lazy by getting a little land on the other side of the river when we are called to posses the whole land. I have decided to press on and see what other lands my God has called me to claim.
