Tech Stuff - Hosting

While the Revival Blog is read only by a handful of windmill chargers, I have a couple other websites that get considerably more traffic. The busiest one gets about 750,000 hits a month and uses about 175GB of bandwidth. I had a shared hosting account, then a reseller account and now have a VPS.

My VPS was supposed to have 256Meg of Ram but if you look at the info below you can clearly see that it does not. I am getting more failures than I can stand.

Especially look at the numproc and privvmpages. This is with Virpus. Really nice people, though less than stellar service. When I discovered this I put in a service ticket. That was three days ago and no matter how many times I inquire I get no response.

I am now looking at the level II VPS from SLhost. Anyone have any feedback? Does anyone else recommend a managed VPS? I would love a dedicated server but it is way out of my budget.

We’ve felt the pain of wanting to go for dedicated servers a number of times. We’ve recently been test-driving Media Temple’s Grid Server and have to say that so far it’s wonderful. They also do VPS, but Grid Server is something else - worth checking out.

I am a little scared to go back to shared hosting. I think I will give them a call. How is that control panel? I am used to CPanel myself. I was going to try Plesk because it takes less resources but haven’t yet.

It’s not shared hosting, least not as you might know it ;-)

You create your own environment on their Grid into which you can install whatever you want. It’s more like an elastic VPS I guess. It’s worth studying their website to understand it. Have you seen Amazon’s ECC? It’s a bit like that.

They also do a more traditional VPS.

The control panel is very nice.
