Common Good: Pat Robertson…. AGAIN.

Here is my problem with linking Sharon’s stroke to his behavor as the elected leader of Israel:
HE IS NOT SAVED!
How else is he supposed to act? God is not sending strokes to the lost as punishment. Hell is awaiting him unless he gets saved. That is the time of punishment. I think we would have a hard time supporting the punishment theory with scripture. I though that God allows the Jews to be taken over as punishment, not strokes.

Over at Blogs4God they have a pretty good read along the same lines.

So what, every stressed-out senior 145 pounds overweight is struck down by the hand of God? Not that God doesn’t weave all these events into the tapestry of His will - but not as some heavenly hit-man as Robertson likes to imagine.

What I learned in 2005 - Complaints are not Solutions

I am going to begin a series of posts detailing what I learned in 2005. They are going to come in no particular order. In my first article I would like to outline some of my problems with the current home church movement.

The biggest challenge I have to much of the home church teaching is that it is a reaction instead of foundational.

The Gospel is unchanging. It does not adapt to popular culture. It is our job to make popular culture adapt to the Gospel. And in fact much of what we see in modern churches is amiss. But the answer is not to change the gospel to address these current short comings. It is to preach the unchanging Gospel. The Gospel has the power, not our arguments.

Much of what I read in the house church movement is so clearly tainted by bitterness and judgment that it must be thoroughly deboned before chewing.

I recently read an interview with an author whose book details what he calls the pagan origin of the local church. The crux of the interview attacked preaching. One point made was,

“It (Preaching) was delivered on special occasions in order to deal with specific problems.”

You would have to surmise that preaching is only associated with problems. (You would also have to surmise that we could get to a place where there are no problems so preaching would not be necessary. Who would defend that any group of humans have gotten tot that point?) This is clearly false. Paul stated that he was ordained a preacher and an Apostle. Jesus told us to “preach the word.” This is not just to correct problems. It is because there is power in the preached Word of God.

“It is temporary. Regular preaching is designed to win the lost or equip the church. Once equipped, the members of the church minister one to another.”

Isn’t this the same argument that cessationists use regarding the gifts?

This is the same elitism that we saw (and still see) in much of the prophetic movement. There are two classes, the super spiritual who “get it” and then the rest of the peons.

The fact is that God is leading people to those greatly dysfunctional churches. People are receiving a call from God to be in leadership in those churches. God is sending people to seminary and bible college. You can debate WHY He is doing it but you cannot debate that He IS doing it. And I can assure you that He is not telling one group that modern church buildings need to all be bulldozed while abiding in many of those same buildings when the people join in fellowship there. Either He hates them or He does not.

Do you feel God is leading you to join or start a house church? God bless you! Go do it. Make disciples. Win the lost. Minister one to another. Be the Church! Attacking other Christians will not accomplish any of that.

The House Church movement has much to offer the Body and its influence will only grow. The message of the priesthood of the believer is a valid, vital one and needs to be preached. But to taint the message with past failures and prejudices only minimizes its effectiveness and delays its embrace.

P.S. Drop the pagan accusations. You sound like a bunch of jehovah’s witnesses.

Day 31

January 6 Psalm 31, Proverbs 31, Revelation 3
(Psalm 31) We need to righteousness and hate lawlessness. It is not enough to say that we love God. We also need to hate the devil. The is a cleansing that happen when we resists sin. There is a liberation that happens when we let go of the sins that so easily ensnare. Like David, I have hated those who regard useless idols. I put my hope in God.
(Proverbs 31) The beginning of this chapter gives really good advice to men. We have to remember not to give our strength to things that will be our downfall. I have in the past done just that. It is so easy no to see the destruction that lays right around the corner but we need to operate in wisdom and discernment. It is not enough to know, we need to act like we know. We need to conduct ourselves in a way that displays that we are citizens of the heavenly kingdom and that we are sons of the most high. We are not orphans and we should not act like we have to scrape by. We need to conduct ourselves in righteousness.
(Revelation 3) There will come a day that we will dine with Jesus and I am so looking forward to it. I have a heavenly hope and it cannot be shaken. No matte how the enemy tries to trip me up and no matter how the world tries to make me stumble, I have my eye on the prize in Christ Jesus. I am going to savor every bite at that banqueting table. I am going to enjoy the conversation at that feast. I can imagine the lighting and the place settings and the furniture and how the room will be adorned. I can hardly wait to see how we are served, possibly by the angles. I wonder if He will bless the food before we eat. Though every good and perfect gift comes from Him.

Day 30

January 5 Psalm 30, Proverbs 30, Revelation 2
(Psalm 30) When we make it through the fire we can know that we will stand in our prosperity. The Lord does not take us through the desert for nothing. It is to develop the character that will stand on the day that we have the prosperity and in the natural do not need God. The wise man does not look at the natural for signs. He knows the way of God and is not moved.
(Proverbs 30) This Agur guy knew something about humility. The very first things he talks about is his lack of knowledge. God gives grace to the humble.
(Revelation 2) Jesus tells both the compromising and the corrupt church to get things right or He is going to show up in a major way. This is not how you want to meet the Lord. You do not want to meet Him in His wrath. There is a whole movement out there now that has completely tried to eliminate whole parts of the ministry of Jesus. That God does not expect righteousness. That He is some happy go luck guy skipping through heaven just as pleased as punch that anybody would choose to accept His invitation for everlasting life. The truth is that there will the great and terrible day of the return of our God. That he will come with a sword in His hand wearing a robe dipped in Blood and on that day people will not be mocking and spitting on Him. And I say even so, come Lord Jesus come.

Get free of the ties that bind

I heard a word the other day and it leapt in my spirit. A preacher was encouraging people in the new year when he gave a bit of advice for businessmen that I grabbed for myself and my family. He said:

Get negative people out of your business.

So if you have not heard from me in a while . . . .

Day 29

January 4 Psalm 29, Proverbs 29, Revelation 1
(Psalm 29) God is so much greater than we are. He is high above the earth and the heavens. He shakes the ground with his voice. This psalm is a great praise song. It speaks of all the earth singing the praises of God. And all of creation does. The entire earth gives glory to its creator.
