Katrina - The Judgement of God?

Is it mere coincidence that this massive hurricane destroyed one of America’s most perverse redlight districts? Is it just the luck of the draw that those casinos were tossed? Was it just wordplay when news broadcasters said there was disaster of “Biblical Proportions?”

Yes.

Was Katrina the judgement of God? Quick answer, No.

Jesus is at the right hand of the Father interceding for us. It is impossible to intercede and judge at the same time.

Surely the judgement of God will fall upon the earth but it did not happen in August of 2005. If the judgement of God came upon a city there would be no escaping, no evacuation, no rescue, no roving journalists. It would be unmistakable.

In the coming weeks you will surely see the prophets of doom declare the vengeance of our God but do not be fooled by their words of judgement.

Yes, casinos were destroyed. Yes, avenues of decadent perversion have been swamped. For this I do not mourn. They say it will take months for New Orleans and Biloxi to get back to normal. I hope they never do. I pray that this catastrophe will cause people to realize that time is short and they need to turn their hearts to God. I hope the church will show the love of Jesus with uncompromised truth for His glory.

There was a great wave of revival after earthquakes destroyed San Francisco in the early 20th century, but God did not cause that event either. He used that earthquake to wake sinners from their slumber. I hope He will do the same with Katrina.

The Beginning of Revival

I love to watch people worship. Sometimes I watch Benny Hinn just to watch the people praising the name of the Most High.

Do you ever wish that you were as passionate in worship as some of the people around you? I have the answer. ..

Prayer. That’s it. Passionate worship is birthed in the prayer closet.

Does prayer seem like work to you? Than you are doing it wrong. If you never hear God while kneeling next to your bed then stop praying next to your bed.

Do you experience God in your car? Than go for prayer drives. I hear God in the shower a lot. I love to take showers. I have a friend that hears Him at the beach. So the beach is his secret place.

Don’ come under condemnation if you don’t like to pray. You are just doing it wrong.

Find out where God is waiting for you and talk with Him there. This is the beginning of revival.

Always and Forever

The Gad(d)about blog wrote about his secular music selection and asked people’s feedback to criticism he received to listening to ungodly music. I guess I have a mixed response.

I agree that it is legalistic to say that a Christian can only listen to Christian branded music. As if that would keep us for God. If that were the case, I wonder if that only limits us to music by professing Christians? If so then Jessica Simpson and R Kelly are in. I don’t want my daughter around either one.

Only Christian branded music? Then non-edifying, Christian pop is ok but edifying songs by Christian secular artists are not.

Only worship music? (I would have to assume that this would mean only music by people who are willing to sign a statement of faith that exactly matches me and my denomination so that “false doctrine” does not pollute me)

I only buy Cd’s of worship music that is recorded live at a service. To me, anything short of that is nothing more than entertainment. My collection consists of the likes of Donnie McClurkin, Robin Mark, TACF worship team, Hillsongs and the like.

I grew up on R&B and Rap. After getting saved in college, I threw my collection of over a hundred Cd’s in the dumpster and I have never regretted it. The truth is that the majority of pop music is based on either lust, anger, or depression. Apparently, there is very little else to write about. I hear much of this same complaining in some gospel music and I avoid those artists.

But there is a strange phenomenon. For some reason, it seems that secular music loses its power with time. Music that was derided in the 80’s, may now be played in a church outreach. Funny how that happens. My wife and I are always a sucker for Heatwave’s “Always and Forever.” We even had it as our wedding song. Of course, the dance floor was empty because our friends were to holy to dance to worldly music.

But I must admit that I channel surf in the car from time to time though I generally have to change the channel when I begin to understand the lyrics (but sometimes I don’t. Don’t tell my friends.). I miss the beats and grooves from the music that I grew up on. I still can’t help but nod my head to a Bootsy Collins bass line. I have lamented in the past that there is no Christian music with the same feel, but I later realized that Christian music with the same feel is of the same spirit, and that is what I am trying to avoid.

I did keep one CD from destruction, Parliament’s Greatest Hits. I began playing Flashlight before even ending this article. My kids think I am nuts.

” Do this . . . “

I find the current debate about communion a little saddening. At what is called the “Last Supper,” Jesus told His disciples to do the same thing in His honor. Here Jesus was telling His disciples to celebrate God in the love feast (Incidentally, this scripture also challenges much of the current teaching on tithing). There are only two warnings on partaking in this:

  • not to celebrate with people in open sin.
  • and the one much of the Body is guilty of,

  • discern the body.
  • What does that mean? Well, if you would like to celebrate God with me, regardless of your doctrine, lets do it.

This was prompted by a story about a man whose lifelong dream was for people of different denominations to have communion together. The story grieved me. Jesus left this as a way to bring us together and we use even that to divide.

KKK Grand Wizard . . . Sins - PAID!

Ran across this testimony of Johnny Lee Clary at the religion news blog.

He was a former KKK grand wizard but got saved and baptized in the Holy Ghost.

He appeared as a Klan rep on several talk shows but now he preaches the Gospel. Glory to God!

The New COGIC

There is a great article on Bishop Gilbert Patterson over at Newsweek. It is part of a cluster of articles this week on religion in America.

Part of Patterson’s appeal: his moral rigor. As he sees it, signs of social depravity abound, from gangs to gay marriage (though he sides with President George W. Bush on moral issues, he’s a vehement opponent of the Iraq war and a staunch supporter of programs like affirmative action). “People are totally confused,” Patterson says, “and they keep looking for something that they can believe is real and something that will keep them grounded.” That “something” is Scripture, whose teachings Patterson has emphasized more than past presiding bishops. He “has restored a level of spirituality and Biblical focus that the denomination had somewhat lost over the last several decades,” says Bishop Charles Blake, head of a large COGIC congregation in Los Angeles that includes celebrities like Denzel Washington. That’s a welcome change for church member Dolores Allen, 53. “I love his preaching and teaching,” she says. “It strengthens me to be rooted in the word of God.”

While most of the articles are on groups with false revelation, if you are at least charismatic (or charismatic curious) this is worth reading.

I know COGIC people and the majority seem extremely religious, something that smacks in the face of Pentecost, but Bishop Patterson preaches the Word and I enjoy listening to him.

Katrina

katrina
If katrina had taken its originally projected path the eye would have gone directly over my home. Last year we lost power for almost a week between the two hurricanes. Believe me when I say it was not fun. Though I do not think God loves me more than he does the people south of me, I thank Him for the storm taking a left.after

The power went out more than a dozen times but never for more than a few minutes.

If you think about it, pray for the people in South Florida who have been emotionally scared by the storms. I was amazed to find out how many people were seriously affected by the fear surrounding the storms of last year.

A common fear is that the storm will destroy all that they have and they will be left with nothing. For older people with little time to recover, this is a particularly frightening possibility.
